Engineers and scientists on NASA and other space programs all use some form of mass expellant to escape Earth’s gravity into space. It can be through a fuel, propellant, or other moving parts like jet turbines and rotors. However, a former engineer from NASA claimed his team was able to make a propulsion system that does not need any of these, and uses electric fields instead.

A New Force in Propulsion?

Charles Buhler, a former NASA engineer, claims that he and his team from Exodus Propulsion Technologies have developed an engine that does not need most of the materials from other propulsion systems to defy gravity. Which means this engine does not need fuel like gas or rocket propellant to work.

Charles argued that his engine creates a new type of force that does not burn anything or push any material into the ground to fly. It does that by generating an electric field to create movement, all of which currently breaks the laws of physics known to modern science.

The idea is very different than almost all types of engines that we have on Earth, so his engine looks more like something from movies such as Star Wars or other space films.

The Science Behind the Claim

Normally, the way engines move is by pushing something out the back to generate force to move forward. An example is a hot gas, which is why rockets generate concentrated fire down below to fly.

However, Buhler’s engine doesn’t do that. If this claim is actually true, then it will change everything in how we explore space and move or fly on Earth.

This is the science behind it, and how Buhler’s team explains the engine. They said they use something called electrostatics, which pertains to the study of electric charges. They all believe that if they can arrange these particles in a specific way that they can generate a force that can move an object without pushing against anything else.

They tested this engine in a vacuum-like room, which means there’s no air inside, and it mimics space as much as possible. The device was able to lift itself off the ground, without any fuel inside, just by that electric static field they are talking about.

Skepticism and the Need for Verification

While all these claims by Buhler’s team are exciting news, no one from the scientific community is actually buying it. Most are skeptical and cautious rather than thrilled. That is because something like this already happened before with EmDrive, but theirs did not work when other scientists tested it.

To validate Buhler’s team’s work, other engineers must actually be able to build the same engine and achieve the same result; only then will this be acceptable for the scientific community to use in their space exploration programs.

Author's Final Thoughts

Whether it is real or not, Exodus Propulsion Technologies is certainly trying its best to develop an engine that is unlike any other. This passion and determination alone will surely achieve something great someday.

However, big claims need proof and pieces of evidence; they will go through a number of tests together with other scientists to test this idea. For now, it remains an exciting possibility that can lead to new discoveries and take our civilization to the next level.
