Singularity refers to a point sometime in the near future where technological advancements become so powerful and fast that they surpass human understanding. This event will revolve around artificial intelligence and human intelligence, closing the gap. First, they will be as smart as us and just as capable, then they will be able to escape our control and comprehension; that is when the singularity begins.

At this point, they will now think for themselves, and create new technologies and discover new knowledge that we won’t be able to understand. That is the phenomenon that scientists have been warning us about: the singularity.

We May Already Be at the Singularity’s Starting Line

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently stated that “We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started”. If you are not familiar, the term event horizon is used in astrophysics, a point near black holes where no one and nothing, not even light, can escape and turn around.

So, he was basically saying we are already at a point where the progression of artificial intelligence would just rapidly progress without ever stopping. Additionally, in some key areas, AI might have already surpassed human intelligence. Examples include chatGPT being better at programming and information retrieval than most, if not all, professionals already, and that is just the beginning.

Experts Predict Singularity Sooner Than You Think

AI Is Evolving FASTER Than Ever The SINGULARITY Is Close!
AI Is Evolving FASTER Than Ever The SINGULARITY Is Close!

AGI or artificial general intelligence refers to a type of AI that completely surpasses humans in every field of knowledge and expertise. Experts are suggesting that we might reach that technology by around 2040 to 2050, while there are some who think it might come earlier, as early as 6 months.

Futurist Ray Kurzweil, the pioneer of the idea of singularity, is predicting human-level AI in 2029 and human and AI merging at around 2045. This might sound negative, but achieving AGI will also mean that AI will be able to help humans in almost any areas we need help in, such as discovering new medicines, curing uncurable diseases, space exploration, and more.

AI Advancing Faster Than Ever

Scientists Say the Singularity Is Coming — And the Gap Between AI and Human Intelligence Is Closing Fast 2

Research data are now showing that every year, AI advances are getting faster and faster. With all the biggest technological companies such as Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google competing with each other, the singularity will most probably be real in our lifetime.

The presence of this fierce competition means each of them has all the motivation to invest and beat each other at this game of whose AI could be the smartest and who could get to that point faster. This is both a positive and a negative, assuming no serious planning about ethics and responsibilities is ensured.

What This Means for Us

Scientists Say the Singularity Is Coming — And the Gap Between AI and Human Intelligence Is Closing Fast 3

Most of our scientists and global thinkers are suggesting that we prepare instead of panicking about AI. Remember, over the course of our existence on this planet, technology has been developed to help us accomplish tasks that we could never do, or take too long to finish.

AI is no different; it should be treated as a tool to enhance our lives and transition to the next type of civilization, not threaten our very own job markets and existence. Super intelligent AI, however, one that will surpass us, will be unknown and unpredictable.

Author's Final Thoughts

The race toward singularity is here, and it is happening at this very moment. Some AI already surpass human professionals at their own jobs, and soon they will be able to do it all, faster and better. But it is not too late, we can still guide this shift thoughtfully, just before the gap between human and AI becomes irreversible.
