AI drones, or autonomous drones, are unmanned aerial vehicles that are powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to accomplish certain tasks that it was programmed to do. Once they are launched into the air, the engineers do not need to worry about them anymore as they try to finish their jobs and only return to their charging pods right after.

Now, Japan has used the marvel of these inventions to help them replant forests that were decimated by wildfires, and it is going greater than they could’ve imagined.

How It Works

Engineers in Kyoto built AI-powered drones with LiDAR and soil sensors with the primary goal of replanting seeds across forest areas that were harmed by natural or man-made disasters. Each drone is capable of flying over the forest’s trees, and then once it arrives at the area, it will stop to plant hundreds of biodegradable seed pods.

Those seed pods packed all the necessary nutrients, helpful fungi, and the actual seed for the AI drones to be able to easily plant them. Additionally, those drones are the ones choosing which area to plant themselves best based on real-time analysis of the AI controlling them. Their result looks promising and is one that future civilizations will be thankful for.

Reforestation with Drones: Restoring Forests Faster

The first trials took place in the Kumamoto region, a forested area that was badly hit by wildfire and has lost a lot of its trees to it. Their records showed that over 80% of all the seed pods took root and sprouted, a rate better than manual traditional methods.

Beyond planting those future trees, what these AI drones have done is not only increase the plants in the forests, but they also helped create an ecosystem where birds, insects, and other animals will someday call their home.

Why It Matters

Japan’s AI Drones Are Replanting Forests 10x Faster Than Humans Ever Could 2

This new drone technology that allows two revolutionary inventions to work together is genius. It is faster and more efficient in planting trees and helping fight deforestation. More importantly, it is less risky for the people managing them, as during dangerous situations like a wildfire, rescuers will not need to put their lives in danger to assess the situation.

There are also some terrains that helicopters and hikers will not be able to reach, but these AI drones could because of their size and maneuverability. Lastly, using data-driven AI programs, they could monitor the health of the forests and make sure that they give these seeds the best possible chance to survive.

Japan’s AI Drones Are Replanting Forests 10x Faster Than Humans Ever Could 3

After a few AI drones have been successful, engineers are now planning on launching wild-scale operations that involve hundreds, if not thousands, of these drones to create new forests or plant new trees on destroyed ones.

It will also help in watering them during drought, as well as surveillance for the protection of wildlife and rare plants in the area. Soon, they will be able to outperform humans in saving our own forests, and ultimately our planet.
