Supervolcanoes pertain to unusually large volcanoes that have the capacity to impact not only their immediate surroundings but also the whole global climate and ecosystem. In the past, eruptions from supervolcanoes have been so powerful that they were able to discharge huge amounts of ash that could block the sun and disrupt the oceans, referred to as volcanic winters.

Recently, scientists have grown wary of one specific supervolcano that might be on the brink of eruption. One that has exploded in the past multiple times, and has probably impacted our ancestors along with other human species like Neanderthals, which are now extinct.

A Giant Under Naples Stirring

Scientists are increasingly concerned that Campi Flegrei, which is west of Naples, Italy, is showing some signs of life. Its last significant eruption happened nearly 500 years ago, in 1538; however, since 2005, one of its craters has been exhibiting significant CO2 emissions.

An estimated 4000 to 5000 tons of Carbon Dioxide gas are being released daily, alongside thousands of small tremors in the area. Experts feared that magma is moving underground, which suggests that the supervolcano is waking up for another massive eruption.

Why It Could Plunge the Planet

The Supervolcano Countdown Has Begun… Are We Ready?
The Supervolcano Countdown Has Begun… Are We Ready?

The classic signs that a volcano is about to erupt are huge emissions of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, frequent seismic tremors, and ground deformation in the area. Because most of these signs only happen when magma moves underground, increasing pressure, and potentially leading to a super eruption.

Since Campi Flegrei isn’t just a normal volcano, but one that is described to have a thousand times larger magma chamber compared to an average volcano, it is not just a local threat. In other words, it is capable of an eruption that could spew thousands of cubic kilometers of ash into the air and block sunlight globally with its volcanic particles.

If this happens, that is only the beginning, as it will be followed by a massive earthquake, along with the volcanic winter. Those will affect the crops, potentially destroying them, and as the world’s food supply chain breaks down, the economy collapses.

Other Supervolcanoes Also Stirring

Aside from Campi Flegrei, other supervolcanoes are beginning to stir up, such as the Long Valley Caldera in California and Yellowstone in the U.S. But in their case, experts agree that there is no imminent danger and none are yet on the brink of eruption.

However, the signs they have shown, such as ground deformation, magma shifts, and many minor seismic tremors, might be a clue about the overall state of our planet and the inner layers of the Earth. Some scientists argue, though, that this is a normal occurrence when compared to historical data and is not out of the ordinary yet.

Monitoring & Mitigation Efforts

Volcanologists are keeping a close eye and have been for years now, and even this is normal because that is the importance of their jobs. To be able to alert us all immediately if there is an imminent danger. Right now, they are mostly looking at gas levels, seismic patterns, and ground deformation using satellite imagery for a more accurate estimate.

There are also a lot of thermal sensors in the area and a network of GPS, or global positioning system, monitoring daily activities. While these supervolcanoes are showing some signs of increased unrest, especially Campi Flegrei of Italy, scientists confirm there is no imminent eruption but still urge the need to prepare and plan for evacuation in case the worst happens.

Author's Final Thoughts

The subtle but increasingly noticeable signs from Campi Flegrei and other supervolcano sites act as a reminder that our planet is still very active. Fortunately, our scientists are just as active, ready to always warn us if their detection tools and new studies suggest a possible eruption.

These are ancient giants, ones that are capable of plunging the world into chaos, but as long as we do not forget that and stay alert and prepared, we will be able to act accordingly when the inevitable happens.
