Scientists just found an exoplanet that might already be hosting alien life. Its name is K2-18b, a world just outside of our own solar system, but still inside the Milky Way galaxy. Continue reading below to find out why scientists think that what they found could be signs of life inside the planet.

A Super-Earth in the Habitable Zone

K2-18B is a world located approximately 124 light years away from Earth. It was found in the Constellation Leo when the Kepler mission was done back in 2015.

The planet is about 8.6 times heavier than Earth and a little bit more than 2.5 times bigger. It was observed to be orbiting its own star, a red dwarf, the smallest main-sequence star. This is a situation where the condition for liquid water to exist might be good enough, and as we all know, this is a key ingredient for life.

Signs of Life?

Scientists find 'strongest evidence yet' of life on distant planet | BBC News

After scientists found out about the K2-18b’s existence, they have closely studied and monitored the planet using the James Webb Space Telescope. Some of the things they detected are carbon-bearing molecules, which include methane and carbon dioxide, in the planet’s atmosphere.

These newest findings suggest that there could be a hydrogen-rich atmosphere on top of the water ocean of K2-18b. Which means it could fit the classification for a planet with hydrogen-rich atmospheres and a vast ocean, called “Hycean”.

Keep in mind that all of these findings are based on our knowledge from our world, and with the little information that we could get from the telescope. The studies’ results are all a possibility, not a certainty.

The DMS Discovery

Scientists Found a Potentially Habitable Planet, K2-18b

In 2025, new studies came out saying that they might have detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in K2-18b’s atmosphere. If you are not familiar with that gas, it is the same one that the marine phytoplankton in our ocean release. This means that those might be a real sign of life, a biosignature.

The presence of the DMS in the K2-18b’s atmosphere, alongside methane and carbon dioxide, has led the whole scientific community to consider the possibility that there might an alien life on that planet already.

However, while all of these new findings are exciting, the majority of scientists urge to exercise caution about drawing definitive conclusions. As most of these compounds can also be created by processes that do not involved living organisms.

Mikly Way, K2-18b and Earth

K2-18b is a very strong candidate for the scientific community’s mission to find extraterrestrial life. Its approximate location is in the habitable zone, combined with the pieces of evidence of molecules that living organisms produce and a possible hydrogen-rich atmosphere and vast oceans, makes it the primary target for future studies. Now, with all of these new discoveries, do you still think we are alone in the universe?
