These 10 facts are a collection of knowledge that we have found online. However, some of them might not be fascinating to you, they are almost unbelievable to us though.
We hope you enjoy these 10 interesting facts together with our own original thoughts and knowledge that we contributed to the conversation. Let’s start with the oldest living animal on Earth, that we know of!
1. Jonathan the Tortoise, the world’s oldest living land animal, was born around 1832—making him nearly 200 years old. He has lived through two World Wars, the invention of the lightbulb, and the first moon landing.

Jonathan’s approximate age is around 192 as of the time of writing this article. This magnificent tortoise is the oldest animal known to us. At least in the land where we can monitor most animals, he is known to be the oldest.
But we all know we have not yet explored the majority of the ocean on Earth. This means that there might be an animal down there that is alive right now that is older than Jonathan.
It is a fascinating fact to think about, but for now, Jonathan holds the title and may he live longer.
Do you think there is an animal that is older than Jonathan and is alive today? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
2. Contrary to what most people believe, about 99% of global internet data travels through underwater fiber-optic cables, not satellites. These cables span over 1.2 million kilometers across the ocean floor!

This fact probably changed the way you think about the world, especially at the time when we have a perception of storing data in a “cloud”. This word or statement makes you think that our data on the internet travels in the sky.
However, in actuality, the majority of our internet data still travels through the cables that were set underwater years ago. And no matter how advanced a particular country is, they are all doing it still.
So, next time you send a message on the internet to your family or loved ones across the continents, don’t think that your data is traveling in the sky, since it most likely is traveling under the ocean.
What do you think about this fact? Is it cool, or do you feel like us too, that we thought we could maybe find another alternative already, in a time where we send rockets and catch them back?
3. The Vikings reached North America nearly 500 years before Columbus. Evidence from L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada, confirms that Norse explorers were there around the year 1000 AD!

History might tell us that Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer was one of the first to ever found and discover the Americas. However, recent studies, show that the Vikings were probably the first ones to arrive and explore the land.
When we think of Vikings, most of us think of strong and animalistic men and women where only the strong survive. We don’t think of them as explorers, that is why this fact is very fascinating.
There could be several reasons why the Vikings were motivated to reach a new land, or they might have found it accidentally. What do you think?
4. If just 1.2% of the Sahara Desert was covered in solar panels, it could generate enough electricity to power the entire world. That’s how powerful solar energy can be!

Yes, we could power the whole world with just the Sahara desert alone. This is according to the calculations of scientists. So, most probably your next question is why aren’t we doing it yet?
Well, the simple answer is it costs too much to build and too much to maintain. This project will require a significant upfront investment in outside countries. This is because the ones where the Sahara desert is located, in northern Africa, don’t have this much budget for it.
Another problem is that we don’t have the capability to deliver this power to the rest of the world. Generating and storing this solar energy is one thing, but the distribution is the hardest part.
Do you think the world should invest in creating solar panels in the Sahara desert? Why or why not? Let us know!
5. A revolutionary tooth-regenerating drug is entering human trials. Scientists have already succeeded in growing new teeth in animals, bringing us closer to a future where fillings and dentures are a thing of the past!

The Japanese research team has now begun clinical trials to advance the development of this tooth-regenerating drug. It might still take some time though before it can be safely distributed to the public.
However, just the thought that your teeth could grow back when you lose them is already a very positive and enlightening story. If you have ever lost a tooth before, you will probably understand why.
After all, we humans lose our teeth in so many ways, like receiving a hockey stick to the face, eating too many of the wrong things, or just flat-out not brushing or cleaning our teeth.
Well now, we can do all those things as much as we want without worrying about our teeth after this drug has been completed. But still, please take care of your teeth!
6. Henry Ford changed the way people work forever in 1926 by introducing the 40-hour workweek with weekends off. His goal? To improve employee well-being while boosting consumer spending on leisure and cars.

Now this is one of the most controversial facts there is. Yes, Henry Ford changed the way we work by introducing a weekday and a weekend. However, some people could argue the positive and negative sides of this.
For example, some people may argue that the 2 weekends off is a positive thing to rest your body and enjoy life with your hobbies and family. While some may argue, that because of this we ONLY have 2 weekends off, when we could have gotten more.
What about you? Do you think Henry Ford changed the schedule of the workweek for the better or the worse? Do you think we should have gotten more than 2 days for our weekends, or is that the best for all of modern civilization? Let us know!
7. Toronto has an underground pedestrian walkway called ‘The PATH’ that stretches over 30 km. It links shopping centers, restaurants, and offices, providing millions of people shelter from extreme Canadian weather.

As someone who lives in Canada and in the Greater Toronto Area, I can attest to you that it is a very positive thing that we have “The Path”.
First off, the winter weather in this country is one of the coldest if not the coldest in the whole world. Now, imagine walking on a normal pathway with snow reaching up to your knees.
Of course, that type of weather usually just happens during a snowstorm, and Canada is fully prepared to deal with this should it happen. However, just think that it does, but you can still go shopping and eat out at a restaurant because of “The Path”.
Also, the homeless people who would have probably frozen outside are now in a heated and calm place. The negative thing is that it could be busy during rush hour, but that is not because of this underground walkway, that is mostly due to Toronto’s overpopulation problem.

8. Studies show that children raised in rural areas surrounded by animals and nature have stronger immune systems and lower risks of mental health issues compared to their urban counterparts.

Studies have shown that if you raise your children in a rural environment, which means together with some farm and pet animals to play with, the cool and fresh air, the absence of city noises like cars and various human sounds, will ultimately lead them to have better immune system.
However, there should be a few ways to recreate this scenario in urban cities, such as their suburban areas. The houses there could be far apart from each other, no highways nearby and some have very large parks and are close to rivers or lakes.
This is the goal of most cities however the jobs necessary to maintain and pay for this lifestyle would most likely require you to move near the downtown area of your city.
What do you think? Are you planning to raise your kids, should you have any, in rural areas? or recreate the environment in the suburban part of the city? Let us know!
9. In Surabaya, Indonesia, you can pay for bus rides with plastic waste! Five plastic bottles or ten plastic cups earn passengers a two-hour ticket, helping to reduce pollution while promoting public transportation.

One of the most creative ways to help reduce pollution and promote an environmentally better form of transportation. Not to mention the money that you can save from this.
However, this also means that they are still probably using large amounts of plastics, just like many other countries. If they could recycle those bottles and cups into something else then this would be better in a whole new league than just garbage collection.
What do you think? Should other countries try to imitate this policy? Or should they put more effort into using less or no plastics at all?
10. A guinea pig named Randy became famous after sneaking into a female-only enclosure and impregnating nearly 100 guinea pigs. That’s one unexpected population boom!

This fact might come as either funny or negative to you, but Randy after escaping his enclosure has sneaked into an all-female one and has impregnated multiple other guinea pigs.
If you are wondering if all guinea pigs can do this, the answer is yes. Most of the male ones can impregnate multiple female guinea pigs if given the chance to do so.
Since guinea pigs can give birth to around 4 liters on average, they could be expecting around 400 guinea pigs. As for the reason, it is actually not clear, but most suspected that a child had misplaced Randy after playing with him, or that he could have broken his enclosure.
Do you think that this fact is funny or somewhat negative? Let us know!
