There have been a lot of studies about when our universe will naturally end. For something so large that we can’t really comprehend it, finding scientific pieces of evidence that could explain how our universe might end presents a challenge. Yet, there have been at least five main theories about it, namely, Heat Death, the Big Crunch, the Big Rip, Vacuum Decay, and the Bounce.

Each of these theories scientifically argues how our universe will meet its natural end based on what is happening now and its theorized history. The fate of the universe, however, is still unknown, but today, let’s discuss the Big Rip theory, which suggests that the universe will end by ripping itself apart.

What Is the Big Rip?

The “Big Rip” theory was initially developed by Robert R. Caldwell of Dartmouth College, and he suggests that the universe, which is constantly expanding, will reach a point where it eventually tears all matter and energy apart, ending itself. This is a theoretical scenario that is based on the behavior of dark energy, a mysterious force that is driving the universe’s expansion exponentially.

Phantom energy is a form of dark energy where the density increases over time, causing an accelerated expansion. If it’s real and phantom energy continues to become more dense, it will reach a point where it will be able to overpower any known forces in the cosmos, which is what will lead to the tearing of the universe apart, down to the last atom.

The Role of Phantom Energy

Could the Universe End by Tearing Apart Every Atom?
Could the Universe End by Tearing Apart Every Atom?

Let’s dive a little bit deeper into the role of phantom energy. It is a hypothetical form of dark energy that is described by the equation of state parameter (w) less than -1. This simply means that it has a pressure that is more negative than what would result from the ratio of pressure to energy density being -1. This leads to the expansion of the universe without ever stopping, and no known limits.

In this model, the density of the phantom energy increases over time, causing the rate of the universe’s expansion to uncontrollably go faster and faster. That is why scientists theorized that it would eventually overpower gravitational forces, even those from black holes, electromagnetic, and nuclear forces. Soon, the equation leads to the destruction of all galaxies, stars, planets, and all the way to the atomic and subatomic particles.

Timeline to Cosmic Disintegration

If the Big Rip holds true, the destruction of all known things, including space and time, will not all happen at once. It will be a sequential event that happens over billions of years, beginning with the clusters of galaxies being torn apart from each other.

Then, a few million years just before the Big Rip, those galaxies will disintegrate, including the solar system. The gravitational fields will be all over the place until they let all cosmic objects go unbound. At just a few seconds of the Big Rip, the atoms and subatomic particles will finally be ripped apart, and since this is what comprises all known matter, everything will end.

Current Observations and Debates

Recent observations argue that the formula is wrong because if you do not round off, the decimal points included in the equation, which is what the Big Rip is based on, suggest that while the universe will continually expand exponentially, it might still not reach the point where a Big Rip could happen.

Additionally, while dark energy is generally considered real, the existence of phantom energy is not definitively proven. In other words, we know that the universe is expanding fast, and will continue to do so for no known limits, however, it is not fast and strong enough for an event like the Big Rip to happen.

Author's Final Thoughts

The Big Rip presents a dramatic and unsettling possibility for how our universe could end. Other scientists have also found that there is astronomical data that could lead to this possibility. However, overall, this scenario remains one of the least likely to happen out of all the other theories for the ultimate fate of our very own universe.
