Have you ever felt like your dog is acting the same way you do? A new study says that this is not just your imagination. Dogs often mirror their owners’ traits, including their personalities and behaviors. An example would be if their owner is more extroverted and likes to go out to socialize, they too will act the same, but if their owner is introverted or anxious and wants to stay home most of the time, their dogs could develop the same habits.

So, whenever you feel like your dog is mirroring your personality, even the weirdest ones, you are probably not wrong. They will absorb most of your traits, and the longer you live together, the stronger the emotional mirroring becomes. However, why is it happening, and has it always been this way? Let’s find out!

A Personality Bond Discovered

Research from Michigan State University, surveying 1,600 dogs and their owners, revealed a lot of similarities in their personalities. Basically, the study found that owners who described themselves are outgoing and like to socialize often had active, excitable dogs, while the owners with anxious or aggressive personalities reported similar traits in their pets.

This is a phenomenon that has been observed across different breeds of dogs and at various ages. From golden retrievers and german shepherds to smaller breeds like chihuahua and maltese, all 50 dog breeds aging from a week old to 15 plus years, have shown personality mirroring of their owners.

This begs the question: Are we shaping who our dogs become, or are we just simply mirroring each other, and that’s why we often have the same behavior as them?

Empathy and Emotional Mirroring

Veterinarians report that dogs are empaths, which pertains to the ability to perceive the mental or emotional state of another individual. In other words, they think that dogs can pick up on human emotions, and there is some scientific basis to it.

Dogs have an exceptional sense of smell that can even detect changes in odor, hormones, and chemicals in human bodies. They can also differentiate between the tones of voices, whether you are talking to them sadly or happily.

There are also studies suggesting that dogs have shown to show sympathy and empathy toward their owners. They will try to approach and comfort you when you are sad and crying. This is probably because they can also distinguish facial expressions. To sum it all up, our dogs have all the tools they need to mirror someone’s personality traits over time.

Nature, Nurture, and Daily Habits

There is also a factor that we can heavily influence, such as the type of dogs we choose to be our pets to begin with. Owners tend to pick the dogs that match their lifestyle, energy, and daily living. The same routines and environment every single day also reinforce why they develop the same traits as their owners do.

Dogs can pick up a lot of their owners’ traits, characteristics, and personalities, but a lot of individuals who share the same habit as you do will probably do. In other words, since our pet dogs live with us, and live like us, it is not shocking to find out that they could develop in the same way as we do over time, after all, they are one of the smartest creatures on earth.
