Randy is one of the most popular guinea pigs, maybe ever. That is because what he has done is so legendary that his story goes viral every other month since 2014. It began in an animal park in England, where Randy lives in an all-male enclosure, separated from the only female ones.
A Sneaky Escape Leads to a Big Surprise
At Hatton Country World, an animal park in Warwickshire, England, the staff were confused as to why some of the guinea pigs had suddenly become pregnant, since they knew they had separated the males and females. Then it turned out that not only are some of the guinea pigs pregnant, but 100 of them are.
The mystery was solved when they found out that a male guinea pig had escaped his own enclosure and had entered an all-female one. Then this guinea pig, who was nicknamed “Randy” later on, has been quite busy since his unexpected adventure.

A Population Boom in the Making
Guinea pigs tend to have 3 to 4 babies, as mentioned in an interview by the caretakers. 1 to 8 pups can be expected per pregnancy, but the common and average number is what they have said. This means that Randy could expect about 300 to 400 kids of his own.
This unexpected number means the animal park has to prepare for a population boom to be able to take care of them all. However, it was impossible for this animal park to be able to give adequate and loving homes to all 300 to 400 new incoming babies, so they had to improvise and asked for help.
Preparing for the New Arrivals

The staff at Hatton Country World did their best to prepare for the inevitable baby guinea pigs that would be born in their enclosure. This includes the preparation of additional space and resources, and contacting individuals who are interested in taking care of a pet guinea pig.
Ultimately, all of them have been successfully adapted into loving homes, and some stayed with the animal park, too. This whole event led the animal park to improve their systems and prepare for any other surprises.

What Happened Next?
After his escapade, Randy was found to have lost a little weight as he probably prioritized other things than eating, and was busy the whole week he was inside the female-only cage. He was then returned to the male-only enclosure for him to rest and recover, and the staff made sure that their cage was better structured.
The animal rescue center also helps and takes steps to prevent such incidents, because next time they fear that it might lead to a lot of guinea pigs not having enough loving homes, and enough resources to live. It has been over a decade since then, and no similar accident has been recorded ever again.
Author's Final Thoughts
Randy’s unexpected adventure led to a significant increase in the guinea pig population in that specific animal park in England. Now, a lot of kids and families have their own pets because of this event; however, it should serve as a reminder of how important secure enclosures and maintenance are for the health of all the animals we humans are taking care of.
