8. Alligators Survive Freezing Temperatures by Brumation

American alligators during winter, when it is extremely cold, can enter a state called brumation. This is slowing their metabolism and becoming lethargic. This state removes the need for a massive meal, which is hard to get anyway during this specific season.

What they usually do is they position their noses or snouts above the ice to be able to breathe while the rest of their bodies remain submerged and motionless underwater.
